SGN project to repurpose UK gas pipeline to carry hydrogen gets green light.

British gas distribution company SGN said it has received approval from energy regulator Ofgem to proceed to the next stage of trialling hydrogen gas through a decommissioned natural gas pipeline.

The 30 million pound ($38 million) project will trial 100% hydrogen gas through a 30km decommissioned gas pipeline between Grangemouth and Granton in Scotland.

The first stage of the project involved surveys and assessments to determine the integrity of the pipeline for carrying hydrogen.

The second stage will connect the pipeline to hydrogen supply from chemicals company INEOS. If successful, a live trial can begin next year, SGN said.

The use of hydrogen in Britain’s main gas network is part of government plans to move to net zero emissions.
