Sgs Launches a Hydrogen Unit in its Normand Laboratory

Sgs launches a hydrogen unit in its Normand laboratory.

With the support of the Normandy region, SGS, world leader in testing, inspection and certification, is investing in an innovative analytical unit for hydrogen quality control in its Harfleur laboratory.

Thanks to state-of-the-art technologies, the full range of analyzes required to guarantee the purity of hydrogen (H2) can be carried out. SGS experts use national and international standards, including EN 17124, ISO 14687 and SAE J2719.

Arnaud Boille, Hydrogen Business Developer, SGS France, said:

As an active member of the ISO/TC 197 technical committees for hydrogen quality and sampling, the expertise of our teams is recognized worldwide.

“At the same time, we are also an active member of Hydrogen Europe.”

SGS is committed to supporting its customers not only on the part of hydrogen quality but also all along the hydrogen value chain. SGS notably offers industrial quality consulting services, risk assessments, audits and inspections, as well as training for the hydrogen market.

SGS INNOVATES IN NORMANDY IN HARFLEUR (76)

The SGS laboratory in Harfleur is COFRAC ISO/CEI 17025 n°1-6456 accredited (scope available on www.cofrac.fr ). SGS’s hydrogen experts have both  field and laboratory experience , enabling them to perform and interpret the most elaborate analyses.

Our analyzers are fully integrated, which means that a single sample injection gives you a full suite of analytical results, reducing turnaround time, costs and sample volumes. The analyzes can quantify 14 different impurities from ppm to ppb as required by the ISO 14687 Grade D standard.

These new capabilities will help support SGS group customers in their commitment to carbon neutrality. In addition, this innovation will strengthen SGS’s leading position in the hydrogen analysis market thanks in particular to its existing facilities in Ireland and China.

Azzedine Laras, Sustainability Services Business Manager, Natural Resources, SGS France, said:

We can take this gas from Hydrogen refueling stations, production sites, and any other site using hydrogen up to pressures of 700 bars.

HYDROGEN: A RAPIDLY GROWING MARKET

Hydrogen represents  a nascent and fast-evolving global market . Its meteoric growth is largely due to the Paris Climate Agreement and recent carbon neutral commitments by countries around the world . Globally, the hydrogen market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.6% between 2022 and 2027.

This promising forecast is not surprising considering that more than 30 countries have implemented ambitious hydrogen strategies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, diversifying and securing their energy supply sources, integrating renewable energies, building up strategic reserves and developing hydrogen production capacities for export and import.
