Singapore – Sembcorp unit signs green hydrogen export deal.

Sembcorp Industries (SCIL.SI) on Tuesday said its unit, Sembcorp Utilities, had signed a deal to explore the feasibility of green hydrogen production in Indonesia for export to Singapore.

The green hydrogen facility deal with Indonesia state-owned utility firm PT PLN (Persero) could produce up to 100,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per annum in Indonesia by using locally sourced renewable energy, Sembcorp said in a regulatory filing.

Wong Kim Yin, Sembcorp CEO, said:

Through this partnership with PT PLN (Persero), we endeavour to co-develop a viable low-carbon hydrogen supply chain in ASEAN that will diversify energy sources for both countries.

Reuters previously reported that Singapore had granted conditional approval to Sembcorp’s unit to import 1.2 gigawatts (GW) of electricity from Vietnam through subsea cables stretching over 1,000 km (620 miles).

Sembcorp Utilities will develop offshore wind and other capacity with Petrovietnam Technical Services (PVS.HN) for export to Singapore, Tan See Leng, Singapore’s second minister for trade & industry, said at the Singapore International Energy Week.

Conditional approvals by Singapore’s Energy and Markets Authority (EMA) recognise a project’s preliminary technical and commercial viability.
