SK Eternix Launches 40MW High-efficiency SOFC Power Plant in Chungju
SK Eternix announced on Dec. 22 that it has commenced commercial operation of Chungju Eco Park, a fuel cell power plant constructed in the Chungju Megalopolis General Industrial Complex in Chungju City, North Chungcheong Province.
Chungju Eco Park is a high-efficiency solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) power plant with a facility capacity of 40MW. It is the largest scale in Korea based on the single SOFC model that SK Eternix focuses on, with a project cost of 271 billion won invested.
Chungju Eco Park uses 120 units of 330kW-class fuel cells, which are Bloom Energy’s ES 6.5 model, and can produce approximately 330 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually. This is enough electricity for approximately 94,000 households to use for one year.
With the commencement of this commercial operation, SK Eternix will now operate fuel cell power plants with a cumulative capacity of 129MW, following Cheongju (20MW), Eumseong (20MW), Chilgok (20MW), Yakmok (9MW), and Boeun (20MW).
Along with this, Daesowon Eco Park (40MW), located near Chungju Eco Park, is also scheduled to enter commercial operation in the first half of next year, and Paju Eco Green Energy with a capacity of 31MW is currently preparing for commercial operation.
Kim Hae-jung, CEO of SK Eternix, said,
The commercial operation of Chungju Eco Park is a case that once again proves the fuel cell business capabilities and execution power that the company has been promoting,
Adding,
We will continue to contribute to enhancing energy self-sufficiency and creating a regional win-win eco-friendly energy ecosystem through the expansion of distributed power supply
Meanwhile, SK Eternix possesses various renewable energy portfolios including solar power, wind power, ESS, and fuel cells, and is expanding its business areas to power brokerage and U.S. ESS.
