Snam and industria italiana autobus team up to promote hydrogen in local bus public transport. Snam4Mobility, the Snam Group company dedicated to sustainable mobility, and Industria Italiana Autobus, the main Italian bus manufacturer, have started a collaboration to promote sustainable mobility solutions in local public transport, in support of the energy transition.

The collaboration between the two companies aims to contribute to the progressive decarbonisation of public and private transport by bus in Italy, through a wide range of solutions for the gradual replacement of obsolete vehicles with higher polluting emissions.

The Memorandum signed between the companies is aimed at working together to promote the adoption of new natural gas buses as well as the use of biomethane (both compressed and liquefied) in urban and interurban areas, supported by the development of specific infrastructure and refueling stations dedicated to the fleets of public and private companies operating in the local public transport sector.

To further accelerate the energy transition process of local public transport, the two companies will also develop feasibility studies and promote initiatives aimed at the ecological conversion and the necessary technological upgrading of buses already in circulation with still significant prospects of useful life.

Snam4Mobility and IIA will also launch activities to enable hydrogen mobility in public transport through the use of latest generation buses and refueling technologies.

Snam4Mobility, together with other companies of the Snam Group, will support IIA in drafting an action plan aimed at making its industrial footprint “zero emissions”. The two companies will also evaluate partnership initiatives for sustainable mobility projects abroad, in countries of common interest.

The transport sector has set itself the goal of containing polluting emissions with a progressive reduction (-55%) by 2030 compared to 1990 values. The country must reach the net zero emission target by 2050.

Technologies such as LNG, CNG and hydrogen are key to tackling the issue of greenhouse gas emissions. In Italy there are about 150 companies active in local public transport. Natural gas buses are currently about 5,000, equivalent to just under 30% of urban fleets and about 1% of suburban ones.

Compared to diesel, natural gas reduces particulate matter (PM10) by 99%, NOx by 55% and CO2 by 15%. In the case of using biomethane, the reduction of CO2 reaches up to 90%.

These activities are part of the promotion of the energy transition, in line with the directives of the European Parliament and Council which commit the EU member countries to support, among other things, the development of the LNG and CNG distribution network through new obligations and investments.

Snam4Mobility offers integrated services for sustainable “smart green” mobility with natural gas (CNG and LNG) and biomethane (Bio-CNG and Bio-LNG), creating refueling infrastructures and supplying components for distributors of which, through the subsidiary Cubogas, it is among the market leaders.

By 2024, the construction of 150 new natural gas and biomethane refueling stations, the expansion of the offer for heavy vehicles (LNG) and the launch of the first five hydrogen refueling stations are expected.

Industria Italiana Auto (IIA) is the most important Italian bus manufacturer that designs, builds and markets a wide range of vehicles, from 8 to 18 meters, in all engines. IIA produces and distributes the Menarinibus brand, produced in the historic plant in Bologna and in Flumeri, in the province of Avellino (formerly Irisbus).

✔️ Snam Group company, Snam4Mobility, and Industria Italiana Autobus have launched a partnership to improve green mobility, contributing to a progressive decarbonisation of public and private transport by bus.
