Stef – cooling down with hydrogen.

[TMM-NL] Sustainable transport with alternative fuels does not only occur in trucks, but also in trailers. Transporter Stef, together with partners Bosch, Lamberet and Carrier Transicold, is starting the FresH2 project, in which the cooling unit is powered by a fuel cell.

FresH2 was initiated by Bosch and will now start on the road with the Stef Group, in France. Carrier Transicold’s vector HE19 multi-temperature cooling unit driven by a fuel cell is therefore installed on a refrigerated trailer from the French manufacturer Lamberet.

FresH2 is a clean and quiet solution designed to provide electricity needed for cooling motors installed on semi-trailers for temperature-controlled road transport.

According to the partners, the fuel cell technology offers a relevant alternative to replace the diesel engine commonly used in refrigerated transport, which is a source of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate emissions.

FresH2 consists of a fuel cell fed by hydrogen tanks, to which an electronic unit has been added that allows the direct current supplied by the cell to be converted into the alternating current needed for the cooling unit to operate. The innovation lies in the direct coupling of the fuel cell with the cooling unit, without using an extensive and expensive buffer battery system on board.

Jean-Pascal Vielfaure, Managing Director France and Southern Europe, Carrier Transicold.

The FresH2 project perfectly illustrates our passion for innovation and reflects our commitment to a sustainable cold chain, in particular through the electrification of our product lines.

“With the FresH2 project, we are pleased to contribute to the energy transition and to participate in the development of a hydrogen-powered solution of the future for trailers.”

The system will be tested this month under actual conditions of use by Stef, in distribution transport from its chambéry location.

Damien Chapotot, Managing Director, Stef Transport.

Stef’s participation in the FresH2 fuel cell project is a new strong marker of the Group’s commitment to green energy.

“Testing this operational prototype in real operating conditions is a first for Stef, which strongly believes in hydrogen as the fuel of the future.”
