Stellantis to Launch Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered Ram Pickup Trucks in the US by 2027.

Stellantis, the global automotive powerhouse, has unveiled plans for the introduction of hydrogen fuel cell-powered Ram pickup trucks in the U.S. market. The launch is slated for late 2026 or early 2027, as revealed by the group’s CEO, Carlos Tavares. The announcement was made during the inauguration of a cutting-edge fuel cell factory by Stellantis subsidiary Symbio in Saint Fons, near Lyon, France.

Stellantis’s Hydrogen Ambitions

The automotive giant further confirmed its ambition to develop hydrogen technology for the Ram brand. The Symbio fuel cell pickups are expected to deliver an impressive range of 320 miles without cargo or 200 miles when towing. Remarkably, these vehicles can be recharged in just five minutes. Stellantis’s commitment to hydrogen technology extends beyond pickups, with its intention to expand its range of fuel cell-powered large vans in Europe under the Peugeot, Citroen, and Opel brands. These vehicles will be assembled at the Hordain factory in France, offering a range of 500 kilometers and a recharge time of under ten minutes.

Subsidy for Price Competitiveness

Tavares underscored the necessity of a subsidy of at least 30,000 euros for three to five years to make these vehicles price-competitive with battery electric and combustion engine vehicles. This statement indicates the significant challenges the industry faces in achieving cost parity with traditional fuel vehicles and highlights the critical role of government support in promoting green transportation.

Symbio’s Hydrogen Gigafactory

Symbio, jointly owned by Stellantis, Michelin, and Forvia, aims to produce 16,000 fuel cells in 2023 at the Saint Fons factory and increase production to 50,000 by 2026. The factory, known as SymphonHy, is Europe’s largest integrated production site for fuel cells. It is part of HyMotive, a 1-billion-euro project supported by the European Union and the French government, expected to create 1,000 jobs and pave the way for large-scale production.
