Sustainable hydrogen supply for Infineon Austria – Linde’s electrolysis plant produces hydrogen from renewable energy

Villach, August 20, 2025 – From now on, the entire semiconductor production at the Villach site will be supplied completely and around the clock with hydrogen from renewable energy. The on-site electrolysis plant has now gone into operation. The electricity required for electrolysis comes exclusively from renewable sources.

Thomas Reisinger, Board Member for Operations at Infineon Technologies Austria, said:

Securing our hydrogen supply has both a strategic and a sustainable effect for us.

“With the electrolysis plant, we are securing our hydrogen supply for the future and minimizing supply dependencies. And we are replacing the existing hydrogen from fossil sources with green hydrogen. In this way, we are reducing CO2 emissions in the supply chain and making a further contribution from Villach to the Infineon Group’s CO2 neutrality target.”

Green hydrogen as a process gas in the semiconductor industry

Hydrogen with a purity of 99.999999 percent is required in the semiconductor industry as a process gas to process material layers in a controlled manner and to manufacture precise microchips. Until now, hydrogen based on natural gas was delivered by truck from Germany to Villach, Austria. With the two-megawatt electrolysis plant, high-purity hydrogen is now produced and used on site without CO2 emissions. Linde is the operator of the plant and was responsible for its design and construction.

Richard Hagenfeldt, Managing Director Linde Electronics, said:

With this PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolysis plant, we are setting a milestone for industrial processes and demonstrating how innovative technology and strong partnerships can drive decarbonization.

“Together with Infineon and our research partners, we are making green hydrogen an integral part of semiconductor production and thus strengthening Austria as an industrial location for the future.”

With hydrogen further towards decarbonization

Using certified green electricity, the electrolysis plant can produce around 290 tons of clean hydrogen per year. This covers 100 percent of the quantity required for production in Villach. Local hydrogen production reduces CO2 emissions in the manufacture of semiconductors.

Funded research project “H2Pioneer”

The industrial partners Linde, Infineon Technologies Austria and VERBUND, together with their research partners HyCentA Research GmbH, the Energy Institute at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz and the flagship region WIVA P&G, have promoted this sustainable solution as an important step towards a “Tech for Green Industry”: The project is funded as part of the FTI initiative “Vorzeigeregion Energie” of the Climate and Energy Fund, endowed with funds from the Ministry of Climate Protection (BMK).
