Sweden first hydrogen refueling network inaugurated
Sweden’s first coherent hydrogen refueling network was inaugurated on May 19th in conjunction with the opening of the Hydris filling station in Nyköpingsbro. This will make it possible to drive hydrogen-powered trucks in commercial traffic along the country’s most important transport routes. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Rickard Nordin (C), energy policy spokesperson, and Urban Granström (S), chairman of the Nyköping municipal board.
– Hydri’s network of filling stations connects Skåne, the West Coast and the Stockholm region along the busiest roads. Now hydrogen vehicles can actually start rolling on the roads in commercial traffic and it is a big step towards breaking the fossil fuel dependence of heavy traffic, says Michel Thomas, Chairman of the Board of Hydri and CEO of the owner company Qarlbo Energy.
The network was officially inaugurated on May 19 in connection with the opening of Hydri’s tenth hydrogen station in Nyköpingsbro. Among those present were Rickard Nordin (C) and Nyköping Municipal Board Chairman Urban Granström (S), along with representatives from Volvo, Scania and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, among others. During the inauguration, a refueling of Volvo and Scania hydrogen-powered trucks was also demonstrated.

With hydrogen-powered trucks, even heavy and long-distance transport that is difficult to electrify can switch to fossil-free.
In many places, the necessary capacity in the electricity grids for fast charging of trucks is lacking, but with hydrogen, haulage companies can choose a fossil-free alternative without affecting operations,
Behind the initiative is the investment company Qarlbo Energy, which, together with its owners Qarlbo and FAM-owned Thisbe, wants to be a driving force in the transition to a fossil-free energy system.

The hydrogen refueling network is an important milestone in the transition to fossil-free transport, but the work continues.
Now we need to scale up quickly and, together with industry, transport buyers and politics, grow the entire value chain. Then hydrogen can become a natural part of a fossil-free transport system within just a few years,
Trucks account for a third of the climate impact of road traffic. Electrification is the main track in the transition, but if all heavy traffic is to reach zero emissions, more alternatives are needed. By 2030, the EU requires all member states to have a fully developed network of hydrogen filling stations along main roads and in urban hubs, which in Sweden means 34 stations from north to south.
