Talgo will test its hydrogen train in March, Spain.

The Talgo company will carry out the “Vittal One” train development project at its Ribabellosa plant in Alava, a commuter-regional train powered by hydrogen, included in the Basque Hydrogen Corridor

Carlos Palacio Oriol, has indicated that:

the hydrogen train is already a technological reality that Talgo is developing with its own technology and that we will test next March.

The company has a long history in the field of the production of light and energy-efficient trains, responding to the commitment to provide railway operators with products that backbone the territory, promoting development and improving connections between towns while contributing to the sustainability of transport and the preservation of the environment.

The Talgo factory in Alava has 40,000 square meters and employs 650 workers directly, in addition to contributing to the maintenance of another 5,000 jobs indirectly. Among its projects is the design and construction of bimode trains, that is, propelled by electricity from the catenary where it exists, and by hydrogen fuel cells in the sections without electrification.

In Europe there are more than 80,000 km of tracks without electrification, which gives a significant market margin to hydrogen-powered trains.

Public-private partnership

This new development is part of the alliance signed, together with the Álava Provincial Council and Petronor, to promote the development of a renewable hydrogen economy in Álava territory. The signatories of the agreement were Ramiro González, Deputy General of Álava, Emiliano López Atxurra, president of Petronor and Carlos Palacio Oriol, president of Talgo.

The alliance creates a context that will favor industrial and technological development around renewable hydrogen, giving companies from Alava the opportunity to grow sustainably and advance in the energy transition.

The alliance, open to the incorporation of new entities that wish to join, responds to the commitment to promote the decarbonization of industry and transport, facilitating technological updating to enable sustainable mobility based on renewable hydrogen as fuel. Thanks for staying up to date with Hydrogen Central.

Another of the signatories of the alliance, Petronor , will develop the necessary infrastructures for the supply of competitive renewable hydrogen that can supply industry and companies in the transport sector in Álava.

The objective is to progressively introduce low-carbon hydrogen, until reaching the total consumption of renewable hydrogen. In this regard, it is worth noting the company’s commitment to achieve zero net CO2 emissions by 2050, to achieve which it will invest in energy efficiency in order to reduce around 300,000 tons of this greenhouse gas per year.
