The FIA and Extreme H launch world’s first hydrogen powered World Cup
The FIA and Extreme H have announced a multi-year agreement to establish the world’s first hydrogen-powered motorsport World Cup. Under the agreement, Extreme H will operate as a FIA-sanctioned championship, bringing hydrogen-fuelled competition to global audiences across multiple seasons.
Taking place in Qiddiya City, Saudi Arabia, from 9th-11th October 2025, the new FIA Extreme E World Cup will test hydrogen’s viability not just in vehicles, but throughout the entire event infrastructure — from paddocks and hospitality to broadcast and logistics.
Each round will run as a self-contained event, featuring heats, semi-finals, and a final, staged on demanding off-road terrain designed to push both drivers and hydrogen technology to their limits. Points will be awarded at every stage to crown the first-ever hydrogen World Cup Champion.
Extreme H builds on the legacy of its predecessor, Extreme E. In its evolution, the series has moved from using hydrogen only to charge racing cars, to powering 80 per cent of event operations. Now, with full hydrogen integration, the World Cup aims to go one step further.
Aside from the obvious innovation and sustainability goals, another key principle of the series is gender equity. Each team will field both a female and male driver — a format pioneered in Extreme E — providing more pathways for women in motorsport.
