The first hydrogen station in the Canary Islands is betting on the Hyundai NEXO to launch a pioneering rent-a-car with hydrogen vehicles
September 2 / Mila Regalado ( @mrg.cars ) . The H2GO Repsol Morro Jable service station in Fuerteventura will serve an exclusive rental fleet with zero polluting emissions
The South Korean brand provides H2GORent with six units of the Hyundai NEXO, a hydrogen fuel cell model, and another six of the 100% electric IONIQ 5
IR Maxoinversiones, owner of the pioneering hydrogen station in the Canary Islands and the first in all of Spain with a supply at 700 bars of pressure, relies on Hyundai’s innovative technology to create an exclusive rent-a-car consisting entirely of zero-emission vehicles, both hydrogen and electric. The Fuerteventura-based company acquires a total of 12 cars with a ‘0’ environmental label, divided into six units of the Hyundai NEXO, the only SUV on the market with a hydrogen fuel cell, as well as another six units of the IONIQ 5, a 100% electric model.
The official delivery took place at the H2GO Repsol Morro Jable service station, an innovative facility located in the port of the town of the same name, which began operations on May 1 and which has all the solutions available for refueling vehicles with 100% renewable products, such as green hydrogen, electricity and even biofuels.
The event was attended by Nayra Pérez, CEO of Hyundai Canarias, Jorge Luis Ramos, Sales Manager of Hyundai, and, on behalf of IR Maxoinversiones, Erika Ruiz, General Manager of Service Stations; Lidia Esther Brito, Director of Customer Service; and José Otero, Project and Execution Manager. The event also included institutional representation, with Alejandro Jorge, Mayor of the municipality of Pájara; and José Manuel Díaz, Councillor for the Primary Sector, Transport, Energy, and Industry of the Pájara Town Council.
In this way, Hyundai Canarias and IR Maxoinversiones form an alliance to promote sustainable mobility in Fuerteventura and the archipelago, using the latest technology with zero polluting emissions into the atmosphere.
A pioneering hydrogen station at a national level
The H2GO Repsol Morro Jable hydrogen station is an exclusive infrastructure in all of Spain, as it is the only one with a hydrogen supply at 700 bars of pressure – double the usual 350. This service station aims to make green hydrogen an accessible and attractive option for all citizens. Located in the Dársena Pesquera in the port of Fuerteventura, very close to the boarding point for the ferries that arrive and head to Gran Canaria, it is an innovatively designed infrastructure, where customers have access to a free electric charger and hydrogen refueling for the H2GORent rent-a-car vehicles.
In addition, this exclusive hydrogen station will be joined by two more at the end of the year, also promoted by IR Maxoinversiones and with direct production of green hydrogen. They will be located in the other two strategic points of Fuerteventura: in the capital, Puerto del Rosario, and in the far north, in the town of Corralejo.
First hydrogen vehicle rental in Spain
H2GORent is the vehicle rental branch of H2GO. This business unit is specialized in leasing hydrogen and electric vehicles, offering customers a wide range of options to meet their needs with an ecological and efficient mobility option.
In this way, the H2GORent fleet will be expanded with six Hyundai NEXO units and another six IONIQ 5 units, vehicles that its clients will be able to rent to travel the wonderful roads of Fuerteventura and discover its impressive landscapes without emitting polluting gases into the atmosphere.
More than a decade driving mobility with hydrogen
Hydrogen is a clean and safe element, which makes up 70% of the matter in the universe. As a fuel source, it is two to three times more efficient than conventional engines, allowing greater distances to be travelled with less fuel. In addition, hydrogen-powered vehicles only emit clean water, eliminating emissions of CO2 and other polluting gases such as HC, CO and NOx.
For all these reasons, Hyundai has been researching and developing hydrogen technologies applied to the automotive industry for more than a decade. In 2013, the South Korean brand launched its first mass-produced hydrogen vehicle, the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell, and in 2018 it launched the current Hyundai NEXO, becoming the only SUV on the market powered by a hydrogen fuel cell.
The NEXO is a car equipped with three hydrogen tanks with a total capacity of 6.33 kg, which give the vehicle a range of 666 kilometres in the WLTP cycle. These store the element that subsequently passes to the hydrogen fuel cell, where a chemical reaction occurs when it comes into contact with the outside air that generates electricity and water (electrolysis). The electricity generated moves the electric motor and the surplus is stored in a high-voltage 1.56 kWh battery. The electric motor mounted on the Hyundai NEXO develops a power of 163 hp and a torque of 395 Nm, which propels the vehicle to a maximum speed of 179 km/h.
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is a 100% electric model that offers a range of up to 710 km in the city. Its battery, which is guaranteed for up to 8 years or 160,000 kilometers, can be recharged from 10 to 80% in just 18 minutes, using a 350 kW fast charger. Its electric motor develops a power of 229 hp that is transmitted to the rear wheels.
It is worth remembering that Hyundai is the only automotive brand that develops vehicles with the five electrified propulsion technologies available on the market today: 48V mild hybrids, self-charging electric hybrids, plug-in electric hybrids, 100% electric and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles.
