The Port of Barcelona will produce green hydrogen for trucks and port machinery

The Port of Barcelona Board of Directors held today approved a public tender to select the company that will build the first hydrogen refueling station for trucks, buses, and land-based equipment at the Port’s terminals and logistics areas. This new facility will be installed on a 7,000-square-meter plot of land in the Port’s ZAL (Zal Port), strategically located at the intersection of the Port, the ZAL Prat, the ZAL Barcelona, ​​the Zona Franca (Free Trade Zone), and the logistics areas of El Prat de Llobregat.

The new hydrogen station will be a pioneer in the Spanish port sector. It will not only supply hydrogen to land vehicles and port machinery but will also produce it using electrolyzers powered by 100% renewable energy. This ensures that the fuel supplied is emission-neutral and can be classified as green hydrogen.

The tender, which represents a step forward in the Port of Barcelona’s environmental sustainability strategy, includes a 40-year concession term with the possibility of extension. Priority has also been given to production capacity, the technical design, and the commercial strategy, with the aim of ensuring service quality and future viability.

The tender requires that the new equipment have a minimum production capacity of 2 MW, a figure that can be increased. The hydrogen station will have a mobile unit to serve terminals with hydrogen-powered machinery, thus expanding its service radius throughout the port area.

The availability of a hydrogen refueling station is key to the Port of Barcelona’s energy transition process. This is a basic infrastructure to facilitate the adoption of green hydrogen as an alternative to fossil fuels, both for powering trucks and port and logistics machinery, as well as other facilities that can be adapted to run on hydrogen.

This equipment could also generate significant synergies with other Port of Barcelona projects, such as the deployment of photovoltaic energy on the roofs of the ZAL warehouses, harnessing this renewable energy to produce hydrogen.

The president of the Port of Barcelona, ​​José Alberto Carbonell, explained:

The Port of Barcelona has made a firm commitment to green hydrogen as a future option to make port activity more sustainable.

“For years, we have hosted and participated in pilot projects that have demonstrated its viability and potential to decarbonize land freight transport. In this regard, pilot tests have been conducted on its adoption in both port machinery and trucks, demonstrating that it is a real alternative for the future,”
