TOPPAN Holdings to Participate in Hydrogen Technology World Expo
Countries and regions around the world are advancing measures to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, including renewable energy use and initiatives to enable a hydrogen society. There are high expectations for hydrogen as an energy source because it is generated from an abundant resource in the form of water and no CO2 is emitted.
For the practical use of hydrogen in society, catalyst coated membranes (CCMs) and membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) are critical components that determine the efficiency and economic performance of hydrogen-related applications. TOPPAN Holdings has been conducting R&D on CCMs and MEAs since 2004, addressing challenges related to performance and durability.
As one of Europe’s leading hydrogen-related events, Hydrogen Technology World Expo enjoys participation from a broad spectrum of companies across the hydrogen supply chain. The TOPPAN Holdings booth (no. 5G15) will present CCMs and MEAs that can be applied in various processes involved in the production, storage, distribution, and utilization of hydrogen. In the area of water electrolysis for the hydrogen production process, the booth will showcase a 3m2 ultra-large CCM for the first time. By taking part in Hydrogen Technology World Expo, TOPPAN Holdings is aiming to expand its provision of CCMs and MEAs to Europe and other markets throughout the world.
Main Solutions on Show
The TOPPAN booth will give visitors a look at high-performance, high-quality CCMs and MEAs that are fabricated using a proprietary sheet-type, double-sided direct coating technique.
1. Ultra-large CCM for water electrolysis
TOPPAN Holdings will present a 0.35m2 CCM and an ultra-large 3m2 CCM that take advantage of the TOPPAN Group’s accumulated printing technologies to achieve uniform coating. Increasing the area of CCMs can potentially lower capital expenditure requirements by reducing the number of stacks and auxiliary devices needed for hydrogen production. The proprietary manufacturing method means that the catalyst layer is not restricted to being a rectangle and can be designed to any shape.
2. MEAs for fuel cells
TOPPAN Holdings offers three types of MEA as standard, catering to diverse needs with different performance, durability, and cost characteristics and delivering products suited to varying temperature, humidity, and other usage conditions. At Hydrogen Technology World Expo, TOPPAN Holdings will present five- and seven-layer MEAs stacked with subgaskets1 and GDLs2 as well as processed metal samples that employ the TOPPAN Group’s fine etching technologies.
