Toyota – “Hydrogen Sharing Network” May Let You Fill Up Your Car At Home – HotCars.

The debate around which power source is the best for automobiles’ future is still raging. Toyota has been one of the few manufacturers that is advocating for hydrogen power over electric cars. The Toyota Mirai is one of the few available hydrogen cars on the market, but the lack of Hydrogen fueling stations in the U.S. is a glaring issue.

Now, Toyota is planning a “Hydrogen Sharing Network” to expand the power sources’ versatility, according to a newly filed patent on December 5th, 2023. In short, this might solve the current hydrogen vehicle infrastructure, and allow owners to fill up our hydrogen Mirais at home.

Key Points Behind Toyota’s Hydrogen Fuel-Sharing Network

  • The new network would allow for safe hydrogen fuel creation and storage at home
  • Each hydrogen Toyota would be digitally authenticated via a smartphone and a network app
  • Solar power can be harnessed to help create the hydrogen fuel
  • Such a system would be game-changing and even hydrogens fight with EVs

Toyota has outlined its plans for this hydrogen network with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Toyota sums up its points in a section titled “What is claimed is” on the 19th page of the document. The main point is that the fuel-sharing network system will have the first in-house fuel cell apparatus.

This system will then become configured to work within a home and include a fuel tank setup to store fuel. Toyota also says there will be a “generations and distribution unit” to generate the fuel and transfer it to a fuel tank and ultimately provide the hydrogen vehicle with the fuel.

The language in the document is complex, but Toyota has drawn up diagrams to give an idea of what this system would look like. The system would also include provision for a solar panel to provide power to the fuel cell apparatus connected to the house, as well as that of either a water or natural gas source.

This would be where the gas generation and distribution unit is then configured to convert the water or gas source into hydrogen gas. This system would use the electrical energy from the solar panel, or a different electrical source for the fuel cell apparatus.

A Digital Key Would Authenticate The Hydrogen Toyota

The system also notes the use of a cell phone to work with the fuel cell system. The car owner’s phone would link up to both the vehicle and the fuel-sharing network to digitally authenticate the vehicle in question. It would then provide the hydrogen fuel to the vehicle once authentication is fully processed.

This system would ensure the Toyota hydrogen vehicle is also matched to the home network in question. It is a long, lengthy, and complex system that Toyota has filed a patent for. But if it works, it could be a game changer, allowing hydrogen to be safely stored in the home, and providing a home refilling point for a hydrogen vehicle.
