Toyota will build the first hydrogen production plant for vehicles in the port of Barcelona.

Toyota Tsusho Europe and Messer, a specialist in industrial gases, plan to build the first hydrogen plant to supply H2 to vehicles in the port of Barcelona .

The application for the concession has been presented to the Barcelona Port Authority by the company SympH 2 ony, a joint venture formed by the Japanese Toyota and the German Messe in July of this year. This company will be responsible for the construction of a production and supply plant for H2 as fuel for vehicles . The facility will have a surface area of 7,080 square meters and will be located on 100th Street in the port of Barcelona, on land owned by the municipality of El Prat. Specifically, the hydrogen plant will be located at the southernmost access to the Catalan infrastructure, near the Hutchison Ports BEST terminal and what will be the future new container terminal at the Catalunya dock .

The new hydrogen plant in the port of Barcelona could be a small balm for the decarbonization of the truck fleet that operates in the terminals of the Catalan area. And we say that it will be just a grain of sand to respond to the demand for H2 supply points, because the most burning issue such as financing sustainable fleets is still an issue to be resolved and of top priority for transport groups.

On the other hand, remember that the industrial estate of the Barcelona Free Trade Zone, adjacent to the port, has a pioneering Iberdrola hydrogen generator. In this case it provides service to TMB’s bus fleet, although the supply of H2 to freight transport was also planned.

As the Messer company explained when the joint venture was formed in early July, SympH 2 ony provides:

“hydrogen mobility solutions for the entire chain of fleet operations. It offers companies, municipalities and port and airport operators in Europe a comprehensive solution to switch to fleets of green hydrogen-powered vehicles.”

Toyota Tsusho Europe, SA, and Messer SE & Co. KGaA:

“bring their respective strengths to the newly created joint venture: Toyota Tsusho Europe, a 100% subsidiary of Toyota Tsusho Corporation as a renowned company for the development of value chains in mobility, and Messer as the largest industrial and medicinal gases company in the world that is not listed on the financial markets and has extensive experience in hydrogen,” says the German company.

To conclude, SympH 2 ony highlights that it offers fleet mobility solutions based on renewable hydrogen, including zero-emission vehicles, hydrogen refueling stations and the supply of hydrogen with optional on-site H2 production, as well as the services necessary for “reliable operation ”. The joint venture also offers the option of billing based on the kilometers traveled by the fleet, “which guarantees calculable total operating costs,” concludes Messer’s statement.
