Trianel and Stadtwerke Hamm establish hydrogen center to develop the hydrogen economy in Hamm.

Hamm. Trianel and Stadtwerke Hamm have established a joint venture with the aim of building a hydrogen generation plant on the site of the Trianel Hamm-Uentrop gas-fired power plant by 2024. The hydrogen is to be produced from renewable electricity and make a contribution to the energy transition and climate protection.

Hamm. With the founding of the project company Wasserstoffzentrum Hamm GmbH & Co. KG, the implementation of this project is to be examined and launched. This is a milestone in order to realize a production plant for climate-neutral hydrogen in Hamm-Uentrop and to put it into use.

Marc Herter, Mayor of the City of Hamm welcomed the latest developments:

The Council of the City of Hamm has made it clear that we see the phase-out of coal-fired power generation in Germany as an opportunity.

“Hamm’s central location as an energy location and as a logistics hub allows us to think and implement innovative concepts. Hydrogen will play a special role in this. The establishment of the Hydrogen Centre is an important step towards the development of the hydrogen economy in Hamm.”

Initially, 30 new hydrogen buses from Stadtwerke Hamm and up to 20 waste collection vehicles from Abfallwirtschaft und Stadtreinigung (ASH) Hamm are to be supplied with hydrogen. For this purpose, the construction of an electrolysis plant of up to 20 MW in size at the Uentrop power plant site is envisaged.

Reinhard Bartsch, Managing Director of Stadtwerke Hamm, stated:

As a project partner of the Hydrogen Centre Hamm, we will soon be able to provide climate-neutral solutions ourselves in order to make a contribution to climate protection with the municipal services of local public transport and waste disposal.

“We are convinced of hydrogen mobility.”

Sven Becker, CEO of Trianel GmbH.

With the establishment of the joint venture Wasserstoffzentrum Hamm GmbH & Co. KG, a milestone has been reached in establishing a regional economy with climate-neutral hydrogen in and around Hamm.

“We can see that there is already great interest in hydrogen, especially in logistics. We firmly believe that there will be a corresponding demand for hydrogen by 2024. Hamm also offers an ideal location to examine a significant investment in hydrogen production,”

Reinhard Bartsch and Klaus Horstick have been enlisted as managing directors of the Hydrogen Centre Hamm. Klaus Horstick is responsible for offshore and hydrogen at Trianel.

In electrolysis, water is split into its components hydrogen and oxygen with the help of electricity. In addition, waste heat is generated that can be used for industrial processes or for heating buildings. Renewable electricity from the North Sea region as well as from regional PV systems is to be used in the hydrogen centre.

The “green hydrogen” produced in this way is a colorless gas that can replace fossil fuels in many applications. Numerous local companies have therefore already signalled their interest in using electrolysis products in their operations. The use in the adjacent gas infrastructure and the possibility of recongeneration into electricity in the adjacent Trianel gas-fired power plant are also an option.

The Hamm Hydrogen Centre is part of a comprehensive strategy by local and regional actors to strengthen Hamm as an industrial location and to promote local climate protection. The city of Hamm, Stadtwerke Hamm and Trianel agree that a hydrogen cluster should be created.

The basis for this will be determined by the beginning of 2022 in an accompanying study with the participation of the University of Duisburg-Essen, the Weserbergland University of Applied Sciences and the Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences.

The Arnsberg district government recently decided to support half of the study. It is already clear that the region, with its economic environment and the specialist knowledge it has established, offers excellent conditions for the hydrogen cluster.

Study and electrolysis plant to stimulate imitators

The hydrogen centre is to be designed in such a way that from 2030 it can supply even larger quantities of renewable electricity from the North Sea via the planned Wilhelmshaven – Hamm high-voltage line and the electrolysis plant planned for 2024 can be expanded by further electrolyser units.

The results of the study on the hydrogen cluster are also to be made available to other cities and urban providers in order to provide an impetus for the conversion of local public transport to hydrogen in NRW.

How the local economy can become climate-neutral occupies many actors from politics and administration. The interest in the use of the new technology is correspondingly high. The city of Hamm is therefore founding the Hydrogen Alliance Westphalia, which is intended to specifically look after and support existing and potential interested parties in a growing hydrogen cluster Hamm.
