TU Delft – Vidi grant for Chiara Falsetti – Controlling hydrogen flow

The Dutch Research Council NWO has awarded no fewer than sixteen promising scientists from TU Delft a Vidi grant. One of them is Chiara Falsetti from the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. With the Vidi grant of up to €850,000, Chiara Falsetti can further develop her own line of research and expand her own research group. Chiara conducts fundamental research into hydrogen transport in, for example, aircraft fueling lines.

Falsetti, said:

For me, the Vidi is recognition of the importance of fundamental research, not as a product to be sold, but as something that is valuable in itself and essential for solving societal challenges.

Controlling hydrogen flow

As Assistant Professor of Heat Transfer and Thermal Management for Sustainable Aviation, Dr. Chiara Falsetti studies the flow of hydrogen through fuel lines, for example on board of aircraft. The unique properties of hydrogen, combined with the dynamic conditions in transport, can lead to uncontrolled evaporation. The resulting two-phase flow and thermal behavior are chaotic and unpredictable, which can severely impact the flow delivery and performance of the components in distribution lines. The efficient, controlled transfer and evaporation of hydrogen from the tank to the propulsion system is a major challenge for the safe and efficient use of hydrogen as a fuel for transport systems, such as aircraft and ships.

Falsetti’s research is an important piece of the larger puzzle of flying on hydrogen.

She therefore collaborates with colleagues, partners, and students.

Falsetti, said:

I believe my project integrates well and contributes to the collective effort to advance hydrogen-aviation research carried out by many colleagues in the faculty and the students of AeroDelft.
