TÜV SÜD selected by Energy Transition Zone (ETZ) to operate pioneering Green Hydrogen test facility in Aberdeen, UK
TÜV SÜD and ETZ Ltd have signed a Collaboration Agreement which sees TÜV SÜD become operator of the Green Hydrogen Test and Demonstration Facilities (GHTDF) site in the south of Aberdeen. This will be the flagship of the Hydrogen Campus within the Energy Transition Zone.
The multimillion-pound project will become one of TÜV SÜD’s foremost green hydrogen test and development sites globally, testing key equipment at industrial scale to ensure its long-term safety and reliability.

A final investment decision is expected early next year, ahead of the GHTDF becoming operational in early 2027, providing open access test facilities for companies wishing to test pioneering hydrogen technologies, including electrolysers, valves and meters.
The project ultimately seeks to drive further investment and facilitate hydrogen production at scale for the local economy.
Martin McCormack, ETZ Ltd Director for CCUS and Hydrogen, said:
This is a major development for Aberdeen. In TÜV SÜD, we have selected an operator of international renown to run what will be one of the foremost green hydrogen test facilities in Europe once it is built.
“Green hydrogen has a key role to play in decarbonising heavy transport, industrial processes, and potentially even heating homes. This facility, with the right partner in place, will help deliver that.”
Dr Martin Hanton, Green Energy & Sustainability Director, TÜV SÜD Northern Europe, said:
Aberdeen’s legacy as a major energy hub, coupled with its track record in developing the hydrogen economy, makes it a natural fit for this agreement.
“TÜV SÜD’s specialism in reducing risk to people, assets and environment also marries closely with the city’s HSE legacy in oil and gas as we develop new low carbon energy systems. We look forward to working with ETZ Ltd to drive forward the use of industrial green hydrogen and help deliver the energy transition.”
