Uniper and Deutsche Bahn conclude long-term contract for the supply of green power.
Uniper and Deutsche Bahn are long-standing partners in the field of secure and sustainable power supplies – a good example of this is the contract supplying the Deutsche Bahn for 100 years this year with hydropower from the Walchensee. These two companies’ partnership also encompasses other products and solutions: in March 2024, for example, they also concluded a power purchase agreement (PPA). As part of this five-year agreement, Uniper will be supplying Deutsche Bahn with approx. 88 GWh of green power from Swedish hydropower every year. The company will begin supplying this power from four run-of-river hydropower plants (Borgforsen, Bodum, Fjällsjö, Sil) at Fjällsjöälven in 2028. The cross-border PPA is another component of the companies’ partnership.
As a key partner in the transformation process entailed by the energy transition, Uniper tailors its products and services to the individual needs of its clients. Always in focus: ensuring both greener energy and security of supply. PPAs are an essential part of the company’s product range that help companies to reduce their carbon footprints.
And that’s also true here: Uniper is helping Deutsche Bahn to expand its green power portfolio through hydropower – simultaneously bringing the Group closer to its goal of making the entire corporation greener. Thanks to this long-term agreement, Deutsche Bahn will also benefit from an improved ability to forecast its costs in what continues to be a volatile energy market.
Carsten Poppinga, CCO Uniper, said:
Demand for green power is rising. As a result of the energy transition, we are not only decarbonizing our own power generation, but are also making more green power available to our customers today, so that they can meet their own climate targets.
“Renewable energy – such as the Group’s own hydropower – is one of the most important components of the energy transition. We are delighted that our PPA is helping to accelerate the decarbonization of Deutsche Bahn, because it is only by working together that we can effectively achieve the energy transition.”
