Vilnius to invest €8m in hydrogen powered transport infrastructure.

In a press release on Wednesday, Vilnius city municipality said it planned to purchase 16 hydrogen-powered buses that would replace diesel buses and develop green hydrogen infrastructure.

The city council approved the 8-million-euro plan on Wednesday to develop green hydrogen production and increase its use in both public and private transport.

Green hydrogen is generated by renewable energy or from low-carbon power and has lower carbon emissions than grey hydrogen, which is derived from fossil fuels without carbon capture.

Starting in 2026, green hydrogen should be produced by a biofuel cogeneration plant of Vilniaus Šilumos Tinklai (Vilnius Heating Networks, or VST), the Lithuanian capital’s district heating supplier.

A 3-megawatt (MW) electrolyser has been installed within the territory of VST that will produce 1.14 million cubic metres of hydrogen gas per year, enough to run 40 city buses.

The project also includes a hydrogen storage facility and a public access station, the local government of the Lithuanian capital said in a press release.
