VoltH2 Terneuzen and Virya Energy are preparing the construction of a green hydrogen factory in the North Sea Port harbor area. To this end, they signed a cooperation agreement to realize it in Terneuzen.
VoltH2 has signed a cooperation agreement in preparation of a long-term concession contract with North Sea Port for an industrial plot of 30,000 m2 in the port area in Terneuzen. The company has started planning and developing the construction of a green hydrogen plant with distribution capabilities.
VoltH2 already signed a cooperation agreement with North Sea Port in August 2020 to also realize a hydrogen factory in Vlissingen.
Expandable to twice the production
VoltH2 Terneuzen plans the construction of a 25 MW electrolysis unit. The plant will produce up to 3,600 tons of green hydrogen annually. The installation thus contributes to sustainability in the entire North Sea Port area. The design of the green hydrogen factory is also expandable, so that production can be doubled and possibly tripled at a later date.

The location is accessible by road, rail and waterways for the supply and distribution of green hydrogen in the wider area. The investment is estimated at 35 to 40 million euros for the first phase.
Green hydrogen hub
The location is located in Terneuzen, in the harbor area of North Sea Port, in the Axelse Vlakte industrial park. In addition to the fact that the location is in a zone where a lot of hydrogen is used, there are also possibilities to switch off the heat. The site is also close to an existing Bio LNG producer and two more biosteam and bio-ethanol projects are under development in the immediate vicinity.
In this way, this area can become one of the clusters of various producers of sustainable fuels and raw materials in the Netherlands. This creates potential synergies between these various new forms of production and the use of green hydrogen. Use as a fuel and raw material in production processes, in addition to gray and blue hydrogen.
Daan Schalck, CEO North Sea Port: “North Sea Port is increasingly committed to the energy transition. The new VoltH2 hydrogen factory in Terneuzen contributes to this and offers many opportunities for companies on the Axelsevlakte business park. North Sea Port is thus able to further strengthen itself as a hydrogen hub in Western Europe. ”
