This initiative will see Wabtec remanufacturing existing trains to run on hydrogen fuel, marking a significant move toward sustainable rail solutions. Previously, the Erie facility was pivotal in the development of the FLXDrive battery locomotive, a major achievement in green transportation. This hydrogen project underscores Wabtec’s commitment to pioneering advanced rail technology and cleaner transportation methods.

Pennsylvania’s Role in Modern Rail Technology Led by Wabtec

Senator Casey emphasized the importance of Pennsylvania’s historical leadership in the rail industry and its continued influence in adopting future transportation technologies. He pointed out that this hydrogen train project will benefit both the environment and the economy. With the support of infrastructure law funding, Wabtec is set to lead in sustainable innovation, ensuring that Pennsylvania remains a key player in the nation’s rail advancements.

The $48.4 million grant allows Wabtec to make essential upgrades to the Erie facility, where control systems and engines of remanufactured trains will be adapted to use hydrogen. This project strengthens Wabtec’s position as a leader in the development of hydrogen-powered trains, aligning with the industry’s shift towards environmentally friendly rail solutions.

Through these innovations, Wabtec continues to contribute to a modern, sustainable future in American rail transportation.
