With players in the hydrogen sector, Symbio acts for clean mobility – France Hydrogen.

Faced with global climate, geopolitical and industrial challenges, the revolution towards clean mobility is underway. To succeed in the energy transition, both industry and transport must quickly adopt decarbonised solutions.

As part of the European strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and in the France Recovery and France 2030 plans, hydrogen is a responsible and sustainable solution, with a high level of performance and quality.

Better still, hydrogen is recognized as a strategic lever with technological and energy sovereignty.

A French company that is a pioneer in the hydrogen market, Symbio, owned equally by Faurecia and Michelin since 2019, aims to become the global technological partner of manufacturers in terms of fuel cell systems for hydrogen, on-the-road and off-the-road mobility.

With the goal of producing 200,000 hydrogen fuel cell systems – StackPacks – by 2030, Symbio contributes® to the acceleration of the deployment of hydrogen mobility, combining zero emissions and performance: minimum charging time, maximum autonomy, without compromising payload capacity.

The systems we produce meet the demanding automotive standards for quality, safety, reliability and durability.

In 2022, more than ever committed to the transition to clean mobility and the structuring of the hydrogen ecosystem, Symbio is changing scale and accelerating its transformation.

Our transformation is based on 3 levers: innovation and industrial excellence; the trust of our partner customers and the structuring of the ecosystem.

Innovation and industrial excellence

The global project of Symbio Hymotive, presented in the framework of the IPIEC has been notified by the French government to the European Commission.

Hymotive is a large-scale transformational project that will accelerate the industrialization and large-scale production of innovative hydrogen fuel cell systems. It will also allow the development of a new generation of batteries whose disruptive technology will increase performance by drastically reducing costs.

Part of the Hymotive project, SymphonHy will be our first gigafactory in France. Located in the Vallée de la Chimie in Saint-Fons, near Lyon, it will be one of the largest systems production sites in Europe. Work is progressing and production will start before the end of 2023, to produce up to 50,000 systems per year.

Hymotive will go further, developing the largest production capacity in France with 100,000 systems per year from 2028, and resulting in the creation of 1,000 additional jobs.

Partner trust

The SymphonHy industrial tool also supports our partnerships, and in particular the expansion of hydrogen mobility at Stellantis, a front-runner on the market.

As a strategic partner, Symbio has been working closely with Stellantis for the past 3 years to launch its sustainable hydrogen mobility strategy for light commercial vehicles. For Stellantis, Symbio has custom-designed a powerful 45 KW system that is compact and meets strict automotive quality and reliability standards.

A world first launched in 2021, this successful partnership will see around 300 hydrogen vans put into circulation in Europe by the end of the year. Our goal: to support Stellantis in its strategic ambition of 10,000 LGVs produced annually by 2024.

It should be noted that Symbio supports other pioneers in hydrogen mobility, such as SAFRA, as part of a long-term strategic partnership for the deployment of hydrogen buses. SAFRA’s Businova buses are already operational in several cities around France and the new generation of Hycity buses will soon be launched.

On the other side of the Atlantic, there is also the “Symbio H2 Central Valley Express” project, supported by the California Energy Commission (CEC), whose goal is to develop a Class 8 hydrogen truck by the end of 2023.

Faurecia and Michelin are also contributing to the zero-emission hydrogen solution supported by the State of California.

The ecosystem is structured

Finally, Symbio continues to strengthen its ecosystem and secures the supply of green hydrogen in Saint-Fons thanks to the signing of an agreement with cnr and Engie.

As a result, this agreement should allow a consumption of 3 to 4 tons of hydrogen per day by 2025.

In addition, in order to anticipate and secure large-scale production capacity and to support the growing needs of their customers, Symbio and Schaeffler announced the creation of Innoplate, a 50/50 joint venture to mass-produce bipolar plates, a strategic component of fuel cells. The goal is to produce 50 million plates and employ more than 120 people in France by 2030.

Thus, Symbio intervenes throughout the hydrogen value chain and surrounds itself with the best partners to, all together, succeed in the challenge of clean mobility, for a better future! Together, we act to build a positive future!
