WSP in Canada Celebrates Milestone for Fortescue Project Coyote – 1,000-MW green hydrogen / green ammonia facility proposed for Prince George, BC.

WSP in Canada congratulates Fortescue on its recent announcement that it has submitted its Initial Project Description for a new green energy hub in Prince George (Project Coyote) to the British Columbia Environmental Assessment office. The Project would include a 1,000-megawatt green hydrogen and green ammonia production facility, with an aim to reduce carbon emissions in domestic and global markets.

Fortescue, an integrated green energy, metals, and technology company, has been working with WSP in Canada’s engineering and advisory team since 2020 on the proposed project, with the company completing advanced scoping and pre-feasibility study work. The project is planned to be situated in the Willow Cale Industrial Park on the unceded traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation (LTN). Fortescue has had a Memorandum of Understanding in place with LTN since 2021.

Beverly Piling, Principal, Hydrogen Market Lead, WSP in Canada, said:

Utilizing professionals from across our business sectors, we have been able to assemble a team that has helped Fortescue understand all elements of how they can make and move green hydrogen at the proposed facility in Prince George.

“Working alongside Fortescue, we are confident that we have provided them with the strategic expertise needed to help bring Project Coyote to this critical milestone.”

Project Coyote represents only one of WSP in Canada’s diverse portfolio of green hydrogen projects. Our dedicated team of engineering specialists, working in tandem with our business advisory team, have developed an effective execution strategy for the design and evaluation of green energy projects right from conception, providing designs balancing operational excellence and financial performance. WSP in Canada’s approach of providing robust engineering solutions while presenting all inherent risks, challenges and opportunities ensures that project stakeholders are equipped with the information needed to make important decisions.

Stephen Appleton, Fortescue Country Manager, Canada, said:

WSP has been diligent in helping us to develop an industry leading, hydrogen production plant establishing our green energy hub in Prince George.

“We thank them for their work in helping bring Project Coyote one step closer to reality.”

Prince George presents an ideal location for the establishment of Fortescue’s new green energy hub. With significant industrial infrastructure already in place in the community thanks to the forest and bioenergy sectors, world-class academic support from the University of British Columbia and the College of New Caledonia, and rail lines leading to the expanding Port of Prince Rupert, the city is primed to realize significant growth based around the green hydrogen industry.
