CryoTruck – Clean Logistics is developing a hydrogen based long-distance truck with CRYOGAS drive.

The listed Clean Logistics SE (ISIN DE000A1YDAZ7), together with renowned partners, is starting the development and testing of trucks with “CRYOGAS” hydrogen tanks and refuelling systems for fuel cell trucks in long-distance transport.

Clean Logistics is responsible for the integration of the refuelling systems and the development of hydrogen and fuel cell technology.

The CRYOGAS onboard storage system and an energy-efficient rapid refuelling system for cryogenic pressurized hydrogen gas are expected to provide a range of 1,000 km for hydrogen trucks and a refuelling time of 10 minutes.

By 2025, a first CRYOGAS hydrogen tank with 80 kg of hydrogen storage capacity, corresponding to an energy content of more than 2,600 kWh, is to be tested in two different truck models in terms of body and drive.

The technological integration and the construction of a prototype will take place in the production facilities of Clean Logistics in Winsen (Luhe). Refuelling takes place at a first test filling station with the help of a newly developed CRYOGAS refuelling system.

In addition to Clean Logistics, the CryoTruck consortium includes commercial vehicle manufacturers MAN Truck & Bus, the hydrogen startup Cryomotive, the Technical University of Munich and the technology company IABG.

With a budget of around 25 million euros, the CryoTruck project is initially planned for three and a half years.

CRYOGAS is an extremely cold compressed gas produced from liquid or gaseous hydrogen. Compared to trucks with conventional 700 bar high-pressure gas storage, CRYOGAS tanks have an approximately 40 percent higher storage density and corresponding range advantages, which are particularly effective in heavy-duty traffic.

CryOGAS technology can be based on existing gaseous hydrogen infrastructure as well as newly emerging liquid hydrogen infrastructure.

Dirk Graszt, CEO of Clean Logistics:

We are very pleased to equip one of our hydrogen tractors with this latest technology in the future.

“The cooperation with our partners offers the opportunity to revolutionize heavy goods traffic in the coming years thanks to CRYOGAS technology. The fact that Clean Logistics was commissioned with the development and construction of the prototype underpins our high level of expertise in the field of hydrogen trucks.” Thanks for staying up to date with Hydrogen Central.

“Once again, we are proving that our hydrogen-based modular conversion systems for semitrailer tractors from the existing vehicle fleet are suitable for all emission-free drive types.”

About the CryoTRUCK Consortium

Cryomotive was founded in 2020 to develop hydrogen tank and hydrogen refueling technology of high density and capacity and bring it to market maturity from 2025.

One development focus is the cryogenic pressurized hydrogen storage CRYOGAS, which has already been successfully developed and demonstrated at BMW for use in passenger cars in a preliminary stage as CcH2 “cryopressure gas storage” under the direction of a Cryomotive founder.

Cryomotive’s CRYOGAS hydrogen technology, which has been further developed for long-distance applications in commercial vehicles, has the potential to enable a range of 1,000 km and a refuelling time of 10 minutes in heavy-duty long-haul commercial vehicles, as well as to combine further performance and flexibility advantages for vehicle drive and filling station infrastructure.

As part of the CryoTRUCK project, Cryomotive will develop a CRYOGAS hydrogen storage system and its core components and test it together with the two truck partners MAN Truck and Bus and Clean Logistics. In addition, Cryomotive and its partners will provide a CRYOGAS test filling station with a newly developed CRYOGAS refuelling system for test operation.
