Cummins Gears Up For Busworld With Zero-carbon Hydrogen and Euro 7 Diesel Technology

Cummins announced it will display two new engines available for coach applications at this year’s Busworld Europe. Taking place from 7 – 12 October 2023 in Brussels, Belgium, visitors to the show will see Cummins’ B6.7H hydrogen internal combustion engine and the Euro 7-ready X10 advanced diesel engine in Hall 7, Booth 775.

Founded on a pedigree of designing, manufacturing and supporting more than 40,000 Euro VI engines for the bus and coach industry, the B6.7H and X10 demonstrate the company’s commitment to providing practical solutions to reduce emissions in heavier-duty or longer-range applications.

Zero-carbon operation with hydrogen engines

Cummins gears up for Busworld with zero-carbon hydrogen and Euro 7 diesel technology.

Rated at 216 kW (290 hp) and with 1200 Nm peak torque, the B6.7H provides diesel-like performance using zero-carbon hydrogen fuel for coach applications in the 9-10m range. It provides a path to zero-carbon emissions that is familiar to OEMs and operators.

Its similarity with current diesel and natural gas powered vehicles reduces integration complexity, while high parts commonality supports optimised parts procurement strategies for operators running mixed fuel fleets.

Ashley Watton, Director, Bus Business Europe at Cummins comments:

Showcasing the B6.7H at Busworld demonstrates our ability to provide coach OEMs with a range of sustainable power options for all duty-cycles.

The B6.7H engine’s lean combustion technology provides zero-carbon power to support our customers’ decarbonisation strategies. It’s also quick to refuel and has significant range advantages for longer-distance operations like inter-city coach transportation.”

Cummins’ hydrogen internal combustion engine technology is also available in a larger displacement, the X15H, with power ratings from 298-395 kW (400-530 hp) and peak torque of 2600 Nm. The X15H offers an operating range comparable to current diesel engines, ideal for long-range applications like tourism and inter-city coaches where range is key.

Next generation diesel: X10

With ratings from 240-335 kW (320 – 450 hp), the X10 has been specifically designed to extend Cummins’ heavy-duty performance down to a 10-litre displacement, while meeting Euro 7’s proposed ultra-low emissions levels.

Suitable for 10-13m coach applications, the X10 features the latest evolution of Cummins XPI fuel system with extra-high-pressure injection and a new electronic wastegate turbocharger enabling fuel savings of up to 5 percent compared to equivalent Euro VI engines. Heavy-duty performance is also reflected with a peak torque of 2300 Nm, improving engine response and vehicle drivability.

“While fuel savings don’t always make for exciting headlines, they do add up to real results for operators, particularly those who are running low-cost or long-distance transportation services. The X10’s enhanced performance offers a significant engine downsizing opportunity with no impact on vehicle performance. Less fuel used means lower cost of ownership and even fewer emissions, this is a win for operators, passengers and the environment.” adds Watton.

A key design feature of the new X Series platform is a Double-Overhead-Camshaft (DOHC) realising significant advances in combustion and thermal efficiency. Friction losses across the engine design have also been reduced and a sculpted block contributes to weight saving. The DOHC design also enables a more efficient integral engine brake to be accommodated.

Exhaust aftertreatment is Cummins’ new EuroTwin system developed for enhanced emissions reduction. The modular system features dual-SCR (selective catalytic reduction) together with a twin-dosing system for precision injection of AdBlue / Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). The X10 can also operate on sustainable HVO fuel and B100 biodiesel, further supporting the decarbonisation of heavy-duty coach applications.
