Generating energy from hydrogen – DEUTZ and RheinEnergie start a joint pilot project.

Starting signal for the joint pilot test: Two Cologne-based companies with a long tradition, DEUTZ AG as one of the world’s leading manufacturers of engines and drive technology and RheinEnergie AG as a regional energy supplier with a clear commitment to the energy transition, are testing the stationary Wastweit eUTZoffers bass motors EnergieerZoffers .

For the lighthouse project, the cooperation partners commissioned the first H2 genset at the RheinEnergie cogeneration plant in Niehl on 20 June. The combination of the TCG 7.8 H2 hydrogen engine with a generator delivers up to 170 kilovolt amperes (KVA) of electrical power in the first six-month test phase.

The electricity generated in this way is fed directly into the Cologne power grid. In a second step, the waste heat from the unit will also be used to generate heat. What DEUTZ and RheinEnergie are testing as examples offers great potential for a decentralised and CO2-neutral energy supply in conurbations.

Dr. Dieter Steinkamp, CEO of RheinEnergie, says:

As a metropolitan energy supplier, we specialize in settlement and district concepts.

“Such an engine could be used to generate electricity and heat on site. Combined with Solarromsentech and stecialized, heat pumps thus supply entire settlement areas in a climate-neutral manner.”

Michael Wellenzohn, Board Member for Sales, Marketing and Service, said:

The pilot test for the production of climate-neutral energy shows that high-tech and Cologne as a location belong together.

“With RheinEnergie, we have found a strong partner. We are very excited about the practical testing of the TCG 7.8 H2 in our joint future project.”

The first test runs of the hydrogen engine on the test bench and the H2 genset on the DEUTZ premises were successful. The joint pilot test is an important step for the engine manufacturer on the way to series production of the TCG 7.8 H2, which DEUTZ is planning for 2024.

In principle, the hydrogen engine with an output of around 200 kilowatts is suitable for all off-road applications.

Dr Markus Müller, DEUTZ Board Member for Research & Development, said:

We are already seeing great interest in our H2 engine from our customers in all areas of application.

“Further pilot applications are already being planned.”

The cooperation partners have jointly invested 1.3 million euros in the pilot project for climate-neutral power generation. A reliable decentralised and greenhouse gas-free energy supply requires that the H2 infrastructure is expanded and sufficient green hydrogen is made available at marketable prices.

Therefore, the partners now see politics as having a duty. Without a regulatory design, the Green Deal cannot succeed.
