Production plant for hydrogen will be built in Rostock overseas port by 2026.

Consortium of energy suppliers and port operators founds rostock EnergyPort cooperation GmbH.

Within the next four years, a 100-megawatt production plant for the production of green hydrogen is to be built in the overseas port of Rostock on the site of the hard coal-fired power plant.

The electrolysis plant is the heart of the “HyTech Port of Rostock” project, which has applied for funding under the IPCEI (Important Project of Common European Interest) program.

A final investment decision has not yet been made and is only planned after receipt of the funding decision.

The plant is to be developed and built by rostock EnergyPort cooperation GmbH, a joint company of EnBW Neue Energien GmbH, RheinEnergie AG, RWE Generation SE and ROSTOCK PORT GmbH, which was recently founded in the Hanseatic and university city.

The four partners will each hold a stake of almost 25 percent in the new company. The aim is to establish and expand a sustainable and green production and distribution structure for hydrogen. The electricity required for this is to be obtained from renewable energies, such as wind turbines at sea and on land.

Every year, up to 6,500 tons of hydrogen are to be produced in a climate-neutral manner in the overseas port of Rostock, fed into a supra-regional distribution network (hydrogen start network) and made available to local consumers.

The site enables the expansion of the plant to an output of up to 1,000 megawatts and can make an important contribution to Germany’s sustainable energy supply and energy security. The investments are in the three-digit million range and are to be made with the help of subsidies.

Dr. Dieter Steinkamp, CEO of RheinEnergie AG, said:

Together with the companies involved, RheinEnergie is driving forward the targeted transformation of Rostock as a power plant location from hard coal to green hydrogen.

“In this way, we create a perspective, not only for the location itself, but for the entire region. In the future, we will make the required quantities of green hydrogen available to all market participants as part of the newly founded company.”

Rainer Allmannsdörfer, Managing Director of EnBW Neue Energien GmbH, who is also Managing Director of the coal-fired power plant, said:

We see the realization of such a project and a subsequent further expansion as a great opportunity to transform a coal-fired power plant site into a sustainable energy location in the long term.

“In this way, we also secure local jobs.”

Jens Scharner, ROSTOCK PORT Managing Director, said:

The successful transformation from fossil fuels such as coal to non-fossil energy sources such as hydrogen affects many parts of the port.

“A consistent entry into the development of a hydrogen economy in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will replace fossil fuels and lead to the decarbonisation of the region. As a partner of the joint company, we would like to continue to be a driving force for a climate-friendly and sustainable port industry.”

Sopna Sury, COO Hydrogen RWE Generation, said:

The overseas port of Rostock is an ideal starting point for a hydrogen hub in northeastern Germany.

“As part of the new consortium, RWE, as the world’s leading company in renewable energies and with its expertise in hydrogen production, is making a significant contribution to the green transformation of the site and the region.”
