Netherlands – entire village of Stad aan ‘t Haringvliet will be off gas in seven years and will switch to hydrogen for heating homes and buildings.

The entire village of Stad aan ‘t Haringvliet will be off gas in seven years at the latest and will switch to hydrogen for heating homes and buildings. The inhabitants of the South Holland village voted for the switch.

A few years ago, a group of residents started the Stad Gasvrij initiative. The municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee has conducted a survey in recent weeks to gauge the mood among the residents.

The municipality calls the turnout high at 84.8 percent. 77.6 percent of people with a natural gas connection voted in favour, 6.4 percent voted against and 15.2 percent did not vote. This means that the municipality will continue with the further development of the plan.

‘Example for the Netherlands and Europe’

Jaap Willem Eijkenduijn, said:

This is a very important moment in the energy transition.

“The positive outcome ensures that residents of the city are a great example for the rest of the Netherlands and Europe.”

The intention is now that the conversion plan from natural gas to hydrogen will be drawn up in the winter of 2024. In the summer of 2025, but no later than 2030, the existing natural gas connections will be converted to hydrogen connections. According to the municipality, Stad aan ‘t Haringvliet will be the first village in the Netherlands to be heated with green hydrogen. “Unique in the Netherlands and even in Europe.”
